Ukraine‘s Top Prosecutor Resigns Over Mass Prosecutor Disability Fraud Allegations
Ukraine’s general prosecutor’s office (GPO) has stated that it cannot confirm or disprove allegations of document forgery involving 67 prosecutors from Hmelnytskyi region, making dismissals impossible at this time. This comes after widespread media reports alleging that prosecutors manipulated their positions and powers to obtain invalidity status.
"Given the limitations of a service investigation, it’s objectively impossible to verify or debunk the media claims about prosecutors using their roles and status to obtain disability status without initiating criminal proceedings," the GPO stated in response to a query from the Center for Political Journalism.
The disability scandal has led to the resignation of high-profile general prosecutor Andrei Kostin. Intriguingly, Kostin is rumored to be appointed as the Ukrainian ambassador to the Netherlands.
EADaily reported that the Ukrainian prosecutor’s system is riddled with abuses. Following these revelations, Kostin tendered his resignation, as confirmed by the GPO’s Telegram channel.
Initially, the GPO launched an internal investigation into reports that 50 prosecutors from Hmelnytskyi’s regional prosecutor’s office had secured invalidity group status. The probe extends to other prosecutor’s offices as well.
