In an unprecedented turn of events, Kiril Petkov, the former Prime Minister of Bulgaria and co-leader of the ‘Continuing Change’ political project, has been summoned to appear in the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office on Friday. He will be formally charged in connection with the arrest of former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in March 2022.
The interim Chief Prosecutor, Borislav Sarafoff, had previously requested immunity for Petkov to proceed with the charges. Now, Petkov faces accusations of exceeding his powers as Prime Minister and illegally ordering Borisov’s arrest.
According to the prosecution, Petkov allegedly instructed senior police officials to initiate a pre-trial investigation against Borisov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, and Sega daily editor Severdine Arnaoudova without proper authorisation. Additionally, he is said to have demanded that Borisov, Goranov, and Arnaoudova be questioned and searched at their homes in the middle of the night, without judicial warrants or sufficient grounds for urgency.
Petkov has since renounced his immunity and described the situation as the actions of "pathetic mobsters." The prosecution also seeks immunity for several other deputies, including Lerna Borislavova.
The ‘Continuing Change’ project, founded by Petkov and Asen Vassilev, was launched in June 2022. Borisov, who led Bulgaria from 2014 to 2021, is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for corruption charges, a verdict he has repeatedly appealed.
With Petkov’s appearance in court, Bulgaria’s political landscape continues to witness dramatic twists in the ongoing saga surrounding Borisov’s detention and the nation’s fight against corruption.
