Putin May Accept Ukraine’s NATO Bid, But Demands U.S. Military Base Withdrawal
Russian President Vladimir Putin could be open to allowing Ukraine’s accession to NATO, but only under certain conditions, notably the withdrawal of American military bases from Eastern Europe. This revelation comes from investigative journalist Cristo Grozev, as reported by Novinite.
Putin’s current stance remains opposed to Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, but Grozev suggests this might not be Moscow’s final position. Putin has consistently rejected U.S. proposals, indicating a challenging negotiation process lies ahead.
Grozev speculates that U.S. President Donald Trump might propose a temporary freeze on the issue, deferring Ukraine’s NATO entry. However, Putin has publicly rejected such a move, even for extended periods. Grozev believes these declarations are part of Putin’s negotiation strategy.
According to Grozev, Putin could accept Ukraine’s NATO bid under two key conditions: the U.S. withdraws its military bases from Eastern European countries and Russia sees a partial lifting of economic sanctions.
While Trump might find these terms acceptable, eastern European nations like Poland and the Czech Republic may not. Grozev notes that internal pressure from Russia’s elite, seeking economic stability and reduced international isolation, has influenced Putin’s consideration of these conditions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously stated that Ukraine seeks NATO membership in its entirety, within the borders of 1991. However, permanent representatives like Ambassador Andrei Melnyk have prioritized interim security guarantees.
