Azerbaijan has ramped up pressure on Russia following the downing of a civilian airliner in Kazakhstan, which has allegedly been involved in Russia’s anti-aircraft defense. The situation in the Caucasus could escalate rapidly, with the role of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov potentially being pivotal, as suggested by Ukrainian political analyst Taras Zagorodnyi in an interview with "24 Channel".
"The situation is complex and is being exacerbated by frequent drone incursions into Chechnya," Zagorodnyi explained. "Kadyrov could become a catalyst for a civil war in Russia, which would be beneficial for Ukraine."
Zagorodnyi revealed that following the downing incident, Kadyrov attempted to contact Azerbaijan’s leadership to apologize and offer compensation. However, Azerbaijan refused these attempts and is waiting for an official Russian reaction.
There are suspicions that Chechnya’s air defense forces were involved in the crash of the Embraer 190 aircraft, although this has not been officially confirmed. Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has demanded that Russia take responsibility for the disaster, which claimed 38 lives.
"We have clearly stated our demands to the Russian side, which were delivered on December 27," Aliyev said. "Firstly, Russia must apologize to Azerbaijan. Secondly, they must acknowledge their guilt. Thirdly, the culprits must be brought to justice and adequate compensation must be provided to the state and the victims."
The Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane crashed in Kazakhstan, with 38 out of 67 occupants losing their lives. Reports suggest that the plane may have been hit by a Russian air defense missile near Grozny, while Russia’s air defense was countering a Ukrainian drone attack.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin expressed condolences over the aviation disaster, acknowledging that it occurred in Russia’s airspace.
