Vietnam’s Quang Tri Province Charts a Course for Sustainable Tourism Growth in 2026
Quang Tri province in Vietnam is strategically refocusing its tourism efforts, moving away from simply attracting large numbers of visitors and towards cultivating higher-value tourism experiences. This shift, mirroring a successful approach adopted by neighboring Quang Binh province, prioritizes quality over quantity and aims to deepen visitor engagement.
Learning from Quang Binh: A Targeted Approach
Prior to a recent regional consolidation, Quang Binh’s tourism sector demonstrated the effectiveness of targeted promotion. Instead of broad marketing campaigns, the province concentrated on markets likely to generate substantial tourism revenue. Initiatives included promotional programs in South Korea and Europe, familiarization trips for travel professionals, press tours, collaborations with influencers, and international media coverage. These efforts successfully established Phong Nha-Ke Bang as a globally recognized destination.
The 2026 Strategy: Connecting Businesses and Developing Products
Quang Tri’s 2026 tourism plan will follow a similar trajectory, emphasizing the connection between business development and product innovation. The province intends to intensify promotional activities to attract tourists from key markets like North America and Europe. Simultaneously, it will focus on leveraging the Lao Bao International Border Crossing to tap into the growing tourism potential of Thailand and Laos.
Targeting High-Value Travelers
The focus will be on attracting affluent travelers interested in adventure tourism, ecotourism, and cultural and historical exploration. This strategy acknowledges that attracting fewer, higher-spending tourists can be more beneficial than attracting large numbers of budget travelers.
South Korea: A Key Partnership
Nguyen Anh Tuan, Chairman of the Quang Tri Tourism Association, highlighted the importance of South Korea as a key market. He stated the province aims to forge partnerships with leading South Korean travel agencies, airlines, and media outlets to develop tour packages that bring South Korean tourists to Quang Tri and the wider central Vietnam region. Efforts will as well be made to establish direct air links between South Korea and central Vietnam to ensure a consistent flow of international visitors.
Domestic Tourism Remains Crucial
Alongside international efforts, Quang Tri will continue to prioritize domestic tourism, with activities planned in major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hue. These initiatives will include participation in tourism fairs, promotional tours, and familiarization trips for domestic travel professionals.
Leveraging Unique Regional Assets
Following the regional consolidation, Quang Tri’s tourism sector benefits from a unique combination of resources: nationally significant historical sites, ecological assets like forests, caves, and hot springs, a promising coastline, and an east-west economic corridor connecting to Laos and Thailand. However, the province recognizes that simply possessing these resources isn’t enough; they must be transformed into compelling tourism products.
Product Diversification: Six Key Pillars
In 2026, Quang Tri will concentrate on six core product categories: cultural and historical tourism, ecotourism and adventure tourism, beach tourism, resort tourism, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, rural tourism, community-based tourism, and green tourism, and cultural and festival tourism.
Creating Immersive Experiences
The emphasis is on developing more in-depth and immersive product design. Each product will be integrated into a comprehensive itinerary with a reasonable duration, key highlights, and the potential for combination with other tours.
A tourism product solely focused on “war memory” and limited to visiting historical sites will struggle to retain visitors. However, designed as a narrative journey rich in experiences and emotions, it will have a distinct advantage. For ecotourism, the challenge lies in standardizing routes, providing services, professional guides, and ensuring safety.
Connectivity: The Key to Longer Stays
One of the main challenges for Quang Tri’s tourism sector is the short length of visitor stays. To encourage tourists to stay longer and increase their spending, the province is focusing on strengthening connections between destinations. The “Magical Heritage Region” encompassing Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam offers a route linking heritage and nature through diverse experiences. Quang Tri will play a central role in this network, offering depth, memorability, and unique experiences.
Collaboration is also being prioritized to promote destinations and develop products for international tourists, including linking Ninh Binh to Quang Tri-Da Nang and Quang Tri-Hue for the Korean market, and Hanoi to Ninh Binh and Quang Tri-Hue for train travelers.
Building a Collaborative Ecosystem
In the tourism sector, connectivity extends beyond linking destinations to encompass entire tourism ecosystems. Travel agencies can design multi-day itineraries offering a variety of experiences tailored to the needs of international tourists, who increasingly prioritize rich and diverse travel experiences. This requires collaboration between hotels, tour sites, and transportation providers to create a seamless and integrated experience.
As Nguyen Anh Tuan stated, the Tourism Association aims to create a strong link between the government, the association, and tourism businesses through promotional and marketing activities, product development, and market exploitation. This collaboration will ensure that promotional efforts are truly effective and contribute to making tourism a key economic sector for the province.
