Norway‘s Nuclear Watchdog Sounds Alarm Over ‘Ticking Time Bomb’ at Oslo Atomic Reactor
Norway’s nuclear energy regulator has issued a stark warning, describing a significant issue at the country’s sole nuclear power plant as a "ticking time bomb." The plant, located just 25 kilometers from Oslo, has been under scrutiny following the discovery of unapproved and undersized bolts used in critical safety systems.
The Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA) raised the alarm after discovering that thousands of bolts, crucial for holding together vital safety components at the Halden reactor, were not fit for purpose. These bolts, used instead of the required high-strength bolts, pose a serious risk, potentially leading to a catastrophic failure and radioactive release, according to DSA.
The plant’s operator, the state-owned energy company Equinor, admitted to using the substandard bolts but insisted that the reactor remained safe and that all safety systems were operational. However, the DSA is not convinced, downgrading the plant’s safety rating from normal to increased attention.
"The fact that the company has not been able to ensure that vital safety systems have the required functionality is serious," said DSA director,ørstein Hasselgård. He added that the regulator’s certification of the plant’s safety systems is now at risk, signaling potential shutdown if the issues are not adequately addressed.
The Halden reactor, launched in 1971, is a unique fast-breeder reactor used for research and development purposes. While it supplies a modest 75 megawatts of power to the grid, the reactor plays a crucial role in Europe’s nuclear energy research landscape. However, its significance is now overshadowed by escalating safety concerns.
Equinor maintains that the reactor remains secure and that it is committed to resolving the issues raised by the DSA. The company has until October to prove that it has identified and rectified the bolt problem, and has proposed a comprehensive plan for addressing the concerns.
