Breaking: Red Avalanche Alert Issued for Nord-Troms and Lyngen Regions

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued a red avalanche alert for the regions of Nord-Troms and Lyngen. The warning comes as a significant snowstorm is expected to hit the area, raising the risk of avalanches.

High Avalanche Risk

The alert, sent out on Monday, warns of a high risk of avalanches striking both exposed roads and settlements. Håvard Toft, duty manager for the Avalanche Warning Service at NVE, told Dagbladet that the region can expect heavy snowfall and strong winds, a recipe for avalanches.

"Given the wind conditions, there’s a risk that the snow will slip off the slopes on its own," said Toft.

NVE advises avoiding steep terrain, defined as any slope above 30 degrees, and runs out zones, where avalanches can accumulate.

Severe Weather Expected

In addition to the avalanche risk, a yellow snow warning is also in effect due to the expected heavy snowfall. Sigrid Auganes, a meteorologist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, told Dagbladet that Monday is set to bring strong winds and heavy snowfall from Nord-Troms down to Bodø.

"We’re expecting 20 to 40 centimeters of snow in inhabited areas, but it could be much more in the mountains," said Auganes.

Strong winds are also expected in the Nord-Troms and Lyngen areas, with wind gusts potentially reaching storm force in the mountains. Auganes warns that the strong winds will contribute to the avalanche risk.

Stay safe and informed as the storm hits. Follow any advice given by local authorities and keep a close eye on weather updates.
