Strengthening healthcare worker protection: Free Hepatitis B vaccination and screening for medical professionals in Kalisat

In a proactive measure to safeguard healthcare workers and accelerate Hepatitis B elimination by 2030, the government has announced free Hepatitis B vaccination for Named and Nakes (medical workers) in Rumah Sakit Daerah (RSD) Kalisat. The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Health’s commitment to ensure the health and safety of healthcare professionals, who are at a high risk of Hepatitis B infection and transmission.

High Prevalence and Growing Concern

Data from the Ministry of Health reveals that the prevalence of Hepatitis B among Indonesian healthcare workers currently stands at 4.7%. Meanwhile, 36.7% of Named (medical officers) and Nakes (healthcare personnel) peers have anti-HBs+ antibodies, indicating past exposure to the Hepatitis B virus or vaccination. These figures underscore the importance of heightened vigilance and prevention strategies against Hepatitis B.

Free Hepatitis B Vaccination and Screening

The upcoming Hepatitis B vaccination drive for medical professionals in RSD Kalisat will take place in two phases. First, a mandatory screening process using rapid HBsAg and anti-HBs tests will be conducted over two days, from Monday to Tuesday, December 23-24, 2024, at the RSD’s Aula building. This preliminary measure aims to detect Hepatitis B early, enabling timely intervention and prevention of severe complications.

Only those with negative or non-reactive test results for both HBsAg (indicating no Hepatitis B infection) and anti-HBs (implying no past Hepatitis B exposure or vaccination) will proceed to receive the Hepatitis B vaccine in the subsequent meeting.

The vaccination program is targeted at various healthcare professionals, including general practitioners, dental professionals, specialists in internal medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, surgery, anesthesia, clinical pathology, nurses, midwives, and medical laboratory technologists.

A Collective Effort for a Healthier Future

By organizing this free Hepatitis B vaccination and screening event, RSD Kalisat demonstrates its dedication to protecting and empowering its healthcare workforce. This concerted effort contributes significantly to the national objective of eliminating Hepatitis B by 2030, ensuring a safer and healthier future for healthcare workers and the communities they serve.
