Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) confirmed Wednesday he is interested in seeking the Senate seat left vacant by the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham. While Norman explores a potential run, the South Carolina Republican delegation faces a broader internal scramble to identify a nominee for the upcoming special election process. The late senator’s sister, Darline Graham, was named by Gov. Henry McMaster to serve as the interim replacement until the end of the term on Jan. 3, 2027.
Ralph Norman Considers a Senate Run to Advance President Trump’s Agenda
Ralph Norman’s Senate Ambitions and Policy Priorities

Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., addressed his potential candidacy during an interview on Wednesday on FOX Business’ “Mornings with Maria,” where he confirmed “he is interested in the job.” Norman cited the current legislative impasse in the Senate as a primary motivation for his interest, specifically targeting the upper chamber’s handling of President Donald Trump’s agenda. “The reason I’m interested? The Senate is standing in the way of passing President Trump’s agenda. They just are. It starts off with the SAVE Act, making sure Americans who are Americans vote in elections,” Norman said.
Norman also signaled a willingness to change Senate procedures, stating multiple times throughout the interview that he would be in favor of getting rid of the filibuster, which he described as the Senate procedure that effectively requires 60 votes to advance most legislation. Rep. Ralph Norman was photographed leaving the U.S. Capitol after the last votes of the week on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025.
William Timmons Criticizes Colleagues for Rushing to Replace Lindsey Graham
Internal GOP Tensions Over the Special Election

The sudden vacancy created by the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham has triggered a rapid scramble among South Carolina Republicans. Rep. William Timmons, R-S.C., an ally and mentee of the late senator, expressed dissatisfaction with how quickly his colleagues, including Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, moved to position themselves for the seat. “I’ll just be honest, it rubbed me the wrong way,” Timmons told Fox News Digital in an interview. “The way that within 24 hours people are talking about that, that’s just not appropriate. And I don’t know, I think it’s unfortunate that these people are so thirsty for attention that they’ll get it at the expense of — It just rubbed me the wrong way.”
On Tuesday evening, July 14, Timmons addressed speculation regarding his own candidacy on social media, writing: “There has been speculation about whether I will seek to replace Senator Lindsey Graham on the ballot this November. My focus today is not on politics. It is on mourning the loss of my friend and celebrating the life of one of South Carolina’s greatest public servants. Unfortunately, the speculation has reached a point where I owe the people of South Carolina a straightforward explanation. Unless the South Carolina General Assembly changes state law, any current member of Congress already on the ballot for reelection who is elected to replace Senator Graham…”
Mike Lawler Rebukes Nancy Mace for Her Social Media Reaction to the Vacancy
Public Controversy and the Primary Field

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) also drew public scrutiny following her reaction to the vacancy. Mace posted a clip on X from “The Godfather Part III” where the character Michael Corleone says: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) responded to the post on X, stating: Literally no one is pulling you back in. This post is grotesque. Taking glee over the potential of becoming a Senator because of a vacancy created by the sudden death of your colleague is vile. Completely unfit to serve. Lawler further noted that he had met Graham in 2008 while interning for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and described Graham as gracious, kind, and funny.
Beyond the established representatives, other figures have begun to emerge. Mark Lynch, who lost to Graham in the primary, announced on Monday his intentions to revive his campaign. Currently, Lynch is the only person who has stated an intent to run in the special election.
