Stay Healthy, Stay Safe: Preventing Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV): Symptoms, Treatment and Risks – WebMD”>Human Metapneumovirus in Jakarta

The East Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jaktim) urges residents to adopt a clean and healthy lifestyle (PHBS) to prevent and anticipate the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Although there have been no confirmed reports of HMPV among residents, health authorities caution the public to remain vigilant, practicing regular hand washing and wearing masks.

First identified in the Netherlands in 2001, HMPV can cause respiratory infections similar to the common flu, with symptoms including cough, runny nose, fever, and sore throat. The virus is spread through direct contact with infected individuals, airborne droplets, and contact with contaminated surfaces.

Kepala Suku Dinas Kesehatan Jakarta Timur, Herwin Meifrendy, warns that children under five, adults aged 65 and above, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic respiratory conditions are most at risk. To manage HMPV infections, patients are advised to rest, hydrate, and ensure adequate oxygen intake. Severe cases may require antiviral medication.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Health Department stated that the current HMPV situation remains relatively safe, and the public should remain calm. Unlike COVID-19, HMPV is not a new virus, having been discovered in 2001. It is one of many microorganisms causing acute respiratory infections (ARIs) throughout the year.

Kepala Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi DKI Jakarta, Ani Ruspitawati, explains that ARI symptoms due to various viruses or microorganisms are similar, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. Infections affecting the lower airways can lead to bronchitis, pneumonia, or lung inflammation. HMPV, along with other viruses like influenza A and B, adenovirus, and coronavirus, are common ARI causes.

"Let’s not panic but remain vigilant," Ani urges the public.
