Retired Bombay High Court judge GS Patel and his family have faced nearly ten months of threats and violence across India and the UK following his 2024 Dawoodi Bohra succession ruling. According to the Hindustan Times, the campaign includes an anonymous letter sent to his daughter in London and a physical assault on her in April.
What triggered the threats against Justice GS Patel?
The intimidation is linked to a landmark April 23, 2024, judgment regarding the Dawoodi Bohra community’s succession. In that ruling, Justice Patel dismissed a suit led by the Taher Fakruddin faction and upheld Mufaddal Saifuddin as the rightful 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq, the community’s spiritual head. The Hindustan Times reports that the perpetrators are demanding the retired judge recant his verdict by recording a YouTube video claiming he was coerced into delivering the judgment.
How has the violence against the Patel family unfolded?
The campaign of intimidation allegedly began in August 2025, when similar letters were sent to Patel’s wife in Mumbai and his daughter, Aditi Patel, in London. Most recently, on June 5, Aditi Patel received an anonymous letter from a purported German sender via a fake London address using the name ‘Dye Sun Ent: Die Soon Enterprises.’ The letter, which included an SD card, threatened the “cremation” of the family unless the judge complied with demands. Additionally, the report states that Aditi Patel was physically assaulted by a masked man in London on April 22, resulting in a broken nose.
Why does this situation matter for judicial independence?
Justice Patel has expressed concern regarding how such intimidation affects the judiciary. He noted that while judges are expected to function without fear or favor, he questioned who would be willing to serve if they and their families faced such threats for performing their duties. He emphasized to the Hindustan Times that a High Court judgment cannot be “recanted” through a YouTube video, noting that the proper legal remedy is an appeal. Representatives of Taher Fakhruddin have also condemned the violence, asserting that these acts are intended to malign their side and derail the pending appeal.
What may happen next?
UK authorities are currently investigating the assault and the recent threats. The Hertfordshire Constabulary has confirmed the case is under active investigation, while the West Hertfordshire counter-terrorism unit is reportedly reviewing the matter. The legal challenge to the original succession ruling may also continue to progress as the judgment is currently being contested before a Division Bench of the Bombay High Court.
