Rinconraptor pipoae Fossil Found in Patagonia as T. Rex Relative

Rinconraptor pipoae Fossil Discovery in Argentina

Paleontologists have identified a new predator species, Rinconraptor pipoae, following the discovery of fossil remains in the Neuquén Basin of Patagonia, Argentina. The findings, published in the Paleontologia Electronica Journal, provide new data on the Megaraptoridae family of carnivorous dinosaurs, Harapan Rakyat reported.

The discovery is significant due to the historically limited fossil record for the Megaraptoridae group. Researchers estimate the species lived approximately 83 million years ago during the Santonian age of the Late Cretaceous period.

Honoring origins and researcher in naming

The name Rinconraptor pipoae reflects both its geographic origin and its scientific history. “Rincon” refers to the city of Rincón de los Sauces. The term “raptor” identifies the dinosaur as a predator, and “pipoae” honors Laura Pipo, who participated in the field excavation before her death in 2020.

Classification within the Megaraptoridae family relies on comparative analysis.

Physical Characteristics of the Fossil Specimen

Initial analysis of the specimen suggests the dinosaur reached a body length of approximately 7 meters. Excavation efforts in a 4-cubic-meter area yielded ten tail vertebrae, portions of the lower tail, the lower end of the left humerus, and the upper section of the right tibia.

While the tibia remained embedded in rock, other elements were recovered from the surface of the site. To determine the animal’s physical proportions, researchers compared these remains with other Argentine theropods, specifically Aerosteon and Maip. This comparative method allowed the team to estimate that Rinconraptor pipoae likely possessed between 40 and 45 caudal vertebrae.

Comparative Analysis with Tyrannosaurus

Researchers highlighted structural similarities between Rinconraptor pipoae and the Tyrannosaurus, particularly regarding the segment count in their tail structures.

Explaining the discovery’s scientific value

What is the significance of the Rinconraptor pipoae discovery?

The discovery is important because the Megaraptoridae family has a limited fossil record. This find helps scientists better understand the kinship and physical characteristics of this group of carnivorous dinosaurs.

How large was the Rinconraptor pipoae?

Based on the fossilized remains recovered in Argentina, researchers estimate that the dinosaur reached a body length of approximately 7 meters.

Where were the fossils found?

The fossils were discovered in the Neuquén Basin in Argentina, a region known for its geological formations from the Late Cretaceous period.

The identification of Rinconraptor pipoae adds to the growing catalog of theropods discovered in the Patagonia region, an area that has previously yielded significant specimens like Aerosteon and Maip.
