Channel 4 cancels Married at First Sight UK after rape allegations
Channel 4 has axed the long-running reality series Married at First Sight UK following an investigation into allegations of rape and sexual misconduct involving former cast members. The broadcaster confirmed Thursday that the show will not return after 10 seasons, ending a run that began in 2015. The program, which became one of the network’s biggest hits, saw single contestants agree to “marry” strangers after being matched by dating experts, though the ceremonies were not legally binding. Participants would go on honeymoons and move in together while being filmed for the series.
The decision followed an independent review of the program’s welfare procedures. One of the women also alleged that her partner threatened her with an acid attack. The accused men have denied the allegations.
Priya Dogra cites fundamental questions about the show’s future
Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra apologized to the women for “the distress they have clearly felt,” according to a news release. While the independent review found that current welfare protocols were compliant with Ofcom’s broadcasting code, Dogra stated that implementing the review’s recommendations would require a level of intervention that would fundamentally alter the show’s premise.
“Implementing all the review’s recommendations raised fundamental questions about the editorial proposition of a show that, I believe, has now run its course over 10 years,” Dogra said in a statement. She noted that the review did not have the authority to adjudicate on the specific criminal allegations made by the contestants.
Legal and regulatory investigations remain ongoing
In June, a male cast member was arrested on suspicion of rape, though he has not been publicly identified. The British broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, has also launched its own investigation into the matter.

The independent review, led by law firm Clyde & Co and former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey, examined over 31,000 documents and 20 hours of footage. While Heggessey found it would be reasonable to continue the show with enhancements, she concluded that some format elements “heighten tension or conflict and consequently the risk profile of the show” and that some elements “could implicitly put pressure on contributors to be intimate.” The review also noted that participants were at risk of becoming “dependent on production and lose touch with reality” due to limited contact with the outside world. The investigation revealed that extensive background checks failed to catch information “missed or withheld by applicants” and that Channel 4's involvement sometimes led to a “lack of objective scrutiny” over production decisions.
Production status for remaining content
Channel 4 has removed all episodes of the series from its streaming and linear services, and the show’s social media channels have been taken down.

Common questions regarding the show’s cancellation
Were the allegations against the cast members proven true?
The independent review conducted by Channel 4 was not tasked with determining the truth of the criminal allegations. Dogra explicitly stated that the review lacked the authority to adjudicate on the serious claims of rape and sexual assault reported by the BBC.
What did the welfare review conclude about the show’s safety?
However, a separate assessment by Lorraine Heggessey suggested that the format created risks, such as pressuring contributors to be intimate and isolating them from the outside world.

Are there still ongoing police investigations?
Yes, at least one male cast member was arrested in June on suspicion of rape. Additionally, the UK broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, has launched a formal investigation into the production.
