Minister says over 80% of Frankfurt detainees have migrant background

Migratory Background of Frankfurt Rioters

At least 80 percent of the individuals detained following the Halloween riots in Frankfurt am Main have a migratory background, according to Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU). In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), cited by Bild, Poseck stated that only a small fraction of those arrested hold exclusively German citizenship. He estimated that 80 to 90 percent of the detainees come from a migratory background.

“I looked into the faces of people with Molotov cocktails who, in my view, quite clearly had a migratory background,” Poseck told the FAZ. The minister rejected the notion that his comments constitute a blanket suspicion against all people with such backgrounds. He argued that the authorities must speak clearly about these problems in order to address them, adding that for a portion of the rioters, integration policy had “partially failed.”

Police Face Multiple Violent Incidents and Sustained Injuries

The riots resulted in injuries to 100 police officers, according to Poseck. Among the incidents reported, one officer lost several teeth after being struck by a stone, while other demonstrators actively prevented injured officers from receiving immediate medical care. Violence escalated during the protests as participants targeted police with pyrotechnics, bottles, and stones. Poseck confirmed that left-wing extremists also participated in the unrest.

Frankfurt Police President Stefan Müller noted that officers were forced to manage up to 30 incidents simultaneously. The situation was further complicated by bystanders, including people with strollers, who hampered police movements during the chaos. Poseck admitted that the police could have acted with greater force earlier in the evening, though he defended the decision not to deploy water cannons at the Konstablerwache square, citing the risk to uninvolved bystanders.

Differing Perspectives on Integration

Poseck’s assessment of the rioters’ backgrounds has sparked debate within German political circles. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) previously questioned the practice of labeling participants by their migratory status, suggesting that such distinctions lead in the wrong direction, particularly when considering individuals who may be third-generation German citizens.

In contrast, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) stated to Bild that the protests, which were initially characterized as peaceful demonstrations by “Generation Z,” were overtaken by groups of left-wing extremists and rioters from a “migrant environment.”
