Rising Healthcare Costs for the Elderly: A Surge in Medications and Prosthetics Increases Spending by €116 Million

by Chief Editor

In a new analysis revealed today, Italy‘s healthcare expenditure surged by an astonishing 116 million euros in a single year, largely driven by escalating costs in pharmaceuticals and prosthetics for the elderly population, according to La Stampa.

This substantial increase, which occurred between 2020 and 2021, underscores the growing pressure on Italy’s healthcare system as the nation’s demographic trends shift towards an aging population. The rising demand for both drugs and medical devices among seniors, coupled with their increasing complexity and cost, has significantly impacted the country’s overall healthcare expenditure.

While the overall spending on pharmaceuticals and prosthetics represented around 8% of the total healthcare expenditure in Italy, the spike in costs for these items highlights a clear trend that is likely to continue in the coming years. Experts advise that there is an urgent need to review and reinforce the strategies in place to manage and control these expenses, especially in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has further strained healthcare resources.
