Esophageal squamous cell cancer is on the rise, with environmental factors and dietary habits playing significant roles in its increasing prevalence, particularly in Eastern countries. Prof. Dr. Emeritus Silviu Constantinoiu, director of the Center of Excellence in Esophageal Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital, recently discussed advanced surgical methods for treating thoracic esophageal cancer and associated conditions.
Advanced Thoracic Esophageal Cancer Surgery
Prof. Dr. Emeritus Silviu Constantinoiu explained that these interventions include minimally invasive surgery for esogastric cancer, cervical and thoracic esophageal diverticula, hiatal hernia with gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia cardia, and post-caustic esophageal strictures. He also noted the rising incidence of squamous cell cancer due to environmental and dietary factors.
"Unfortunately, we still have cases of post-caustic esophageal burns in rural Romania due to the use of harmful substances like hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and sodium hydroxide in artisanal soap production. These substances pose major risks, especially in households with low awareness,"Prof. Dr. Emeritus Silviu Constantinoiu warned.
The Dangers of Sodium Hydroxide
In many rural areas, sodium hydroxide is still being used to make soap, exposing populations to serious risks. Prof. Dr. Emeritus Silviu Constantinoiu explained that improvising with dangerous substances often leads to severe burns, which may not be treatable for up to six months.
The Progress of Minimally Invasive Surgery
Bringing some hope, Prof. Dr. Emeritus Silviu Constantinoiu shared that 74% of these conditions can be treated using minimally invasive methods at the Center of Excellence in Esophageal Surgery. This approach shortens hospital stays, reduces medication and blood transfusion requirements, and speeds up recovery and social reintegration.
