Melaka is launching a state-subsidized durian festival to manage a significant surplus of fruit, offering visitors all-you-can-eat access to premium Musang King and Black Thorn varieties for RM10. According to Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, Melaka rural development, agriculture and food security committee chairman, the event will take place on July 5 at Duta Riang Villa in Selandar, Jasin.
How the Melaka Durian Festival Subsidies Work
The state government is intervening to manage a bumper harvest by subsidizing entry costs for the public. While the standard orchard entry price is set at RM25, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh has agreed to subsidise RM15 for each of the first 2,000 visitors. This reduces the out-of-pocket cost to RM10 for those early attendees, as stated by Dr Muhamad Akmal.

What to Expect at the Selandar Orchard Event
The festival is designed as a family-friendly venue featuring more than just fruit consumption. Dr Muhamad Akmal confirmed the event will include traditional performances, food trucks, and a petting zoo. To manage high demand, organizers have implemented a 20-minute time limit for each all-you-can-eat session. Dr Muhamad Akmal noted that while the window may appear short, his personal testing confirmed it is sufficient for participants to enjoy the fruit.
Will the Subsidy Quota Increase?
There is a possibility that the subsidized entry count will be expanded. Dr Muhamad Akmal stated he is confident that Chief Minister Ab Rauf may pay for more visitors during the festival. The Chief Minister is scheduled to attend the festival personally, and according to Dr Muhamad Akmal, he is known for offering “surprises” to the public during such community engagements.
