Romanian military engineers used 180 kilograms of explosives to blast a major rock outcrop near the Danube’s Bala Canal on August 3, 2026, in an extraordinary effort to redirect cooling water to the country’s sole operational nuclear facility. The blast sent a towering geyser of water and rubble into the air near the village of Izvoarele, clearing the way for authorities to construct a temporary dam.

State-owned nuclear producer Nuclearelectrica, which normally generates a fifth of the nation’s electricity, had already taken one of its two reactor units offline the previous week.

“Any day past Wednesday or Thursday that the nuclear power plant functions is a gain,” Romania’s defence minister, Radu Miruțǎ, said on Monday. “A day of it functioning is three times more efficient than the costs of this operation.”

Defence Minister Radu Miruțǎ noted that the military had spent three decades unsuccessfully attempting to remove the troublesome rock before the drought exposed it entirely. If the partial river diversion fails to supply adequate coolant, the plant will face a complete shutdown by Thursday at the latest.

The four-reactor facility, which typically accounts for nearly half of Hungary’s electricity production and about a third of its consumption, operated at just over 10 per cent of its capacity on Monday, producing a mere 240 megawatts instead of its usual 2,000. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced via Facebook that engineers managed to keep the final operating turbine running, narrowly avoiding a weekend shutdown.

While authorities initially warned that Paks might power down entirely over the weekend, slightly more optimistic river forecasts indicated the plant could maintain its diminished output until Tuesday or Wednesday.
