Rory McIlroy penalized two strokes at Abu Dhabi Championship

Rory McIlroy assessed two-stroke penalty at Abu Dhabi Championship

"Obviously there’s no intent," Rory McIlroy said after being assessed a two-stroke penalty for improving his lie during the first round of the Abu Dhabi Championship. The six-time major winner was penalized for pressing down on the grass behind his ball with his club before hitting a chip shot on the par-four 12th hole at Yas Links.

The infraction changed his score on the hole from a six to a quadruple-bogey eight. While McIlroy initially signed for a four-under 68, the post-round penalty adjusted his official first-round score to a two-under 70.

Ruling under DP World Tour Rule 8.1b(4)

The DP World Tour stated the penalty was issued for a breach of Rule 8.1b(4). This rule permits players to ground their club lightly in front of or behind the ball, provided the weight of the club is supported by the grass and the lie is not improved. Officials determined that McIlroy’s action of pressing down with his club violated this provision.

Video footage captured the moment McIlroy’s wedge pushed down a clump of grass behind the ball, which did not return to its original position. McIlroy told reporters he was attempting to get a feel for the lie, which he described as being in the bottom of a sandy divot. "I don’t feel like I pressed down," McIlroy said. "But at the same time, I don’t want the perception of, like, people thinking like I got away with something either."

Francesco Laporta leads first-round leaderboard

While McIlroy fell to a share of 33rd place following the penalty, Francesco Laporta moved to the top of the leaderboard. The Italian player carded an eagle and eight birdies in a bogey-free 62, finishing the day at ten-under par.

Laporta holds a three-shot lead over Jon Rahm, Sam Bairstow, and Bernd Wiesberger, who all finished at seven-under. The tournament serves as a critical event in the Race to Dubai, where McIlroy is currently chasing a record-equalling eighth title. Eugenio Chacarra, who leads the current standings, also carded a 70, while second-placed Patrick Reed recorded a 74.

Francesco Laporta leads as McIlroy ties for 33rd place

  • Leader: Francesco Laporta (-10)
  • McIlroy’s position: T-33 (70)
  • Next event: The season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
  • Race to Dubai context: The top 50 players from the current rankings will advance to next week’s season finale following this week’s event.

Questions regarding the penalty

What was the specific technical reason for the penalty?
The penalty was applied because officials determined McIlroy pressed his club into the ground behind his ball, which altered the grass and improved his lie. Rule 8.1b(4) allows for grounding the club lightly, but prohibits pressing down on the surface.

How does this affect McIlroy’s standing in the Race to Dubai?
McIlroy entered the tournament trailing leader Eugenio Chacarra by 948 points. The two-stroke penalty dropped him eight shots off the lead, narrowing his path to closing the points gap with only two events remaining in the 2026 schedule.
