Rotterdam Police Fire on Warning Shots, Injuring Two Suspects During Chase
In a dramatic turn of events, Rotterdam police opened fire on two suspects during a high-speed chase on New Year’s Eve. The incident unfolded as thousands of residents and visitors gathered to watch the city’s renowned fireworks display.
The chase began around 23:30 when officers attempted to stop a vehicle suspected of containing stolen goods. The driver refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit through the city streets. As the chase reached its climax, the vehicle was cornered, and the occupants attempted to flee on foot.
Police fired warning shots, but unfortunately, the suspects did not heed the warning. In a split second, the situation escalated, and a police officer discharged his weapon, striking both suspects. They were immediately transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the suspects or the nature of the stolen goods in their possession. The incident is now under investigation by the Dutch National Police’s Internal Investigation Department.
This New Year’s Eve incident has raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement in the Netherlands. Although police priority is to apprehend suspects without injury, the use of firearms is not unprecedented in high-stakes situations.
The city of Rotterdam, known for its vibrant cultural atmosphere, had taken extensive safety measures for the celebrations, including deploying additional police officers and trauma teams. Despite the incident, the fireworks display went ahead as planned, attracting thousands of spectators.
