Title: Rotterdam‘s Poverty Reduction Deputy Mayor, Natasha Mohamed-Hoesein, Resigns Unexpectedly
In an unanticipated turn of events, Natasha Mohamed-Hoesein has stepped down from her role as Rotterdam’s deputy mayor for poverty reduction, effective immediately. The politician, who had been in the position for barely a month, cited no direct reason for her resignation but mentioned she intended to continue her pursuit of justice from a different role.
Mohamed-Hoesein submitted her resignation letter to the municipal council on Thursday, without providing further explanation. Speculation about her departure has surfaced, suggesting her discontent with certain issues, including Rotterdam’s decision to discontinue the ‘bed, bath, bread’ regulation, which provided temporary shelter to undocumented individuals. However, her resignation letter did not explicitly pinpoint this as the decisive factor for her sudden departure.
The move marks another setback for DENK, the political party Mohamed-Hoesein was formerly associated with. She had previously served as the party’s faction leader in the Rotterdam municipal council and its deputy chair. In the 2021 general elections, Mohamed-Hoesein was placed fourth on DENK’s candidates list, narrowly missing a seat in the Dutch House of Representatives.
Mohamed-Hoesein assumed the deputy mayor position on September 28, 2023, succeeding her party colleague Enis Yigit, who had reportedly faced significant resistance during his tenure. At the time of writing, it remains uncertain who will replace Mohamed-Hoesein.
