Title: Russia Praises Switzerland‘s Dialogue Efforts Despite Strained Bilateral Relations
Meta Description: Russia’s Ambassador to Switzerland hails the nation’s commitment to dialogue, despite challenging bilateral relations.
Berne, Switzerland – In an unprecedented show of diplomatic thaw, Russia’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Sergueï Garmonine, has expressed his appreciation for Switzerland’s persistent efforts to maintain open communication channels, despite the strain in bilateral relations.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on the social media platform X, the 71-year-old diplomat highlighted Switzerland’s resilience in keeping dialogue alive at a time when political discourse has frozen between Moscow and many other Western nations.
" différence entre un faisaient," the ambassador noted, crediting Switzerland’s unique position in international affairs for its ability to maintain diplomatic ties amidst global tension.
Relations between Bern and Moscow have deteriorated since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Switzerland’s decision to reinstate European Union sanctions against Russia and exclude Moscow from a peace summit at Bürgenstock last June further strained the ties. However, Russia appreciates Switzerland’s willingness to engage in dialogue, with Ambassador Garmonine underscoring that "the situation in Switzerland is significantly better than in many other Western countries."
In a recent development, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, to discuss the Swiss presidency of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Russia claimed that they also touched upon the Ukrainian conflict during their discourse.
While the Russian envoy acknowledged the difficulty in bilateral relations, he emphasized that direct communication channels remained open between Russia and Switzerland. With Swiss mediation in international conflicts such as those in Ukraine, Syria, and Libya, the ambassador expressed hope that this dialogue could bear fruit in resolving pressing global issues.
