At least 13 people have lost their lives and another 63 are injured after a Russian missile strike targeted the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, according to the region’s governor. The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening, also reportedly damaged high-rise buildings and an industrial complex. In the nearby town of Stepnohirsk, two more people were killed.
This latest incident comes as Russia continues its ongoing barrage of assaults on the Zaporizhzhia region, which remains under partial Russian control. The territoires include the defunct Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Responding to the latest atrocity, President Volodymyr Zelensky took to Twitter, stating, "Nothing is more horrifying than launching missiles at a city, fully aware that civilians will suffer." He urged Western allies to maintain pressure on Russia.
In a bonus for Ukraine, US President Joe Biden is expected to announce an additional $500 million in military aid for Oekraïne. According to Reuters, this is one of the final packages Biden will authorize before his term ends and he is succeeded by Donald Trump. Since the start of the conflict, the United States has dispatched over $60 billion in military assistance to Ukraine.
