According to Game File reporting, Saber Interactive CEO Matt Karch targeted Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford through an intentional Easter egg in the debut trailer for Rideshare Stimulator. The vehicle teaser, released by Saber, features a Texas license plate reading “USB DRV” paired with a cog wheel symbol, referencing Pitchford’s well-documented 2018 controversy involving a USB drive left at a Medieval Times restaurant.
The Trailer Easter Egg and Corporate Fallout
The Rideshare Stimulator trailer includes several subtle nods to the studio rivalry. According to statements given to Game File by Saber CEO Matt Karch, the reference acts as direct payback. “The dig is because Randy took shots at Embracer in Borderlands 4,” Karch stated.
The corporate history between the two studios explains the public friction. Following a drying up of investment capital, Embracer underwent massive restructuring. In March 2024, Embracer sold Saber to an investment company controlled by Karch, and sold Gearbox in an all-stock deal to long-time Borderlands publisher Take Two Interactive. Other studios were shut down. Hundreds of developers were laid off.
Differing Public Stances on Embracer Group
Leadership at both studios handled the corporate breakup differently.
In contrast, Saber’s Karch emerged as a defender of Embracer’s management despite the severe industry layoffs.
