Heaviest Snowfall in Years Blankets Netherlands, Prompting Roads Authority to Deploy Over 8 Million Kilograms of Salt
The Netherlands woke up to a winter wonderland today as heavy snowfall blanketed the country, causing widespread disruption and prompting the public roads authority (Rijkswaterstaat) to take decisive action. This is the most significant snowfall the Netherlands has experienced in recent years.
Streets and houses across the country were transformed into a white, icy landscape, with snow intensities varying from region to region. According to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), the snow began to fall heavily overnight, continuing into the early morning hours.
In response to the hazardous conditions, Rijkswaterstaat deployed a massive 8 million kilograms of salt to keep roads clear and safe for commuters. This significant amount is part of the authority’s efforts to minimize the risk of accidents caused by slippery roads.
"The safety of our road users is our primary concern," a Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson said. "We are working diligently to ensure roads are treated and clear of ice and snow."
While the snow brought challenges for many, it also offered an early Christmas gift for children and adults alike, providing an opportunity to enjoy sledding, snowman building, and other winter activities.
"I woke up to a beautiful white landscape and couldn’t resist building a snowman with my kids," said one Amsterdam resident. "It’s not something we get to experience very often here."
However, the joy was short-lived for some as snow removal operations began, turning the pristine scene into a messy mix of snow, slush, and salt.
Meanwhile, the KNMI has warned motorists to drive carefully and allow extra time for their journeys, as snow and ice can cause roads to be slippery and visibility to be reduced.
In a sudden turn of events, the code geel warning, which was initially implemented due to the anticipated snowfall, was lifted for the province of Zeeland by late morning. This change indicates that the snow threat has subsided in the region.
As the Netherlands continues to battle the wintery conditions, residents are reminded to stay safe and informed, following advice from local authorities and weather services.
