The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) is hosting a series of events throughout February to honor the contributions of Black Americans to both the local community and the nation’s history.
Celebrating Black History in San Antonio
SAPL’s programming includes exhibits, musical performances, film screenings, and art activities. These events aim to encourage San Antonians to recognize, connect with, and learn more about the deep roots of Black culture within the city, not just during February but year-round.

Several specific events are planned throughout the month. From February 1st to 28th, the Carver Branch Library at Denver Heights Community Center will host “Go Together: San Antonio’s Black and African American Historic Communities,” a pop-up exhibit highlighting the city’s East Side neighborhoods and their role in preserving African American culture.
Poetry and spoken word will take center stage with “Black Stories: A History of Black Americans in Texas and the Powerful Impact of Storytelling,” led by 2025 Mosaic African Diaspora Award winner Zenobia Anderson. Workshops will be held on February 4th, 8th, and 12th at various library locations including Carver Branch Library, Potranco Branch Library, and Igo Branch Library.
On February 7th, the Pan American Library will host “Your Local Community Zine Workshop,” facilitated by Office of Historic Preservation Specialist Dr. Charles Gentry, beginning with a discussion of the graphic novel “A Home, a Church & a Hospital.”
The Carver Friends group will present a breakfast and lecture on February 14th, featuring Cary Clark discussing Martin Luther King Jr.’s final book, “Where do we go from here: Chaos or Community?”
Creative expression will also be encouraged with an “Inspirational Quotes Art” project at the Pan American Branch Library on February 14th, and an enchanting jazz concert featuring DevSoul at the Collins Garden Branch Library on February 21st.
