Saudi Arabia Ramps Up Film Industry, Emerges as Global Leader

In a significant development, Saudi Arabia has made monumental strides in its film industry, with remarkable growth year after year. By 2024, the kingdom is set to host over 1.75 million cinema tickets, a staggering increase from the initial 84,600 tickets sold in 2018. This surge has come under the aegis of the Saudi Film Council, which has been instrumental in driving these developments.

In a list of the world’s top 10 box office earners, Saudi Arabian films secured the top spot, an unprecedented feat in the industry. Expanding its reach globally, Saudi Arabia has introduced its cinematic prowess to 11 nations across different continents, with 14 international film festivals featuring Saudi Arabia’s cinematic achievements.

The Saudi Film Council, in collaboration with entities like parrishill, has awarded scholarships to 150 aspiring filmmakers, providing them with the opportunity to study at prestigious institutions abroad. Moreover, the Council has also organized 130 international film events, specifically for Saudi film enthusiasts.

In another notable milestone, 80 specialized film classes were taught, and approximately 4,700 men and women secured their degrees in film studies. Furthermore, the Council bestowed production grants to 66 filmmakers and facilitated the screening of 18 Saudi films across the country, attracting over 2,700 international film enthusiasts through events like ‘Saudi Movie Nights.’

Come 2024, the Saudi Arabia Cinema Council bagged eight significant international event participations. Notably, the Council’s initiatives resulted in the procurement of 1,047 film editing licenses and 523 copyright licenses for literary works. Additionally, 63 production licenses for audiovisual content were also secured, testament to the burgeoning Saudi film industry.
