Sauna Etiquette Under Scrutiny: Dutch Sauna-goers Push Back Against Indecent Behavior
In the heart of the Netherlands, sauna enthusiasts have had enough. Reports of inappropriate behavior in saunas across the region have led to a grassroots campaign, dubbed the "Sauna Decorum Crusade," aimed at promoting respect and etiquette in these communal spaces.
The movement, sparked by a series of shocking incidents, has gained traction among regular sauna-goers who are eager to reclaim their relaxing haven. "We’ve heard stories that would make your ears clatter," said Hans de Vries, a long-time sauna enthusiast and one of the campaign’s organizers. "It’s time to draw the line and remind people that saunas are about relaxation and respect, not lewd behavior."
The campaign, which has taken off on social media under the hashtag #SaunaRespect, encourages sauna-goers to report inappropriate behavior and to call out offenders directly. "We’re not here to shame anyone," de Vries clarifies, "but to educate and remind people that there are rules and expectations when it comes to sauna etiquette."
The push for better behavior comes as no surprise to sauna experts. "Saunas have always been spaces for quiet reflection and relaxation," says Dr. Eva Jansen, a cultural anthropologist who has studied sauna culture. "But as their popularity has grown, so too have the challenges of maintaining that atmosphere."
The campaign has already seen results. Several sauna facilities have reported a decrease in complaints, and many have adopted stricter policies to enforce respect and decorum. "We want our saunas to be places where everyone feels comfortable and safe," says de Vries. "And that means everyone needs to do their part to maintain that environment."
For now, the "Sauna Decorum Crusade" shows no signs of slowing down. With the support of sauna-goers and facilities alike, it seems that respect and etiquette may finally be heating up in Dutch saunas.
