Mayo’s historic Gaelic football triumph over Kerry at Croke Park triggered widespread celebrations and propelled the Saw Doctors’ 1992 anthem “The Green and Red of Mayo” to the number one spot on Spotify’s Ireland chart, according to band co-founder Leo Moran.
From Clare Island to Croke Park: The Origins of a Modern Anthem
The track originated during a 1990 trip when the band played a festival on Clare Island off the coast of Mayo. According to Moran, band member Davy Carton and late collaborator Gerry Mulholland began writing a poem on the boat ride back to the mainland under cloudless skies, gazing across at the hills of Croagh Patrick.
Did you know? Gerry Mulholland had a strong GAA connection through his nephew Alan Mulholland, who later managed the Galway team, despite the Saw Doctors’ deep roots in Tuam, County Galway.
Davy Carton added music to the verses shortly after the journey. However, band manager Ollie Jennings noted the track was initially a “slow burner” that did not achieve instant commercial dominance upon its release on the 1992 album All the Way from Tuam. According to Jennings, Paul Claffey of Midwest Radio championed the song early on as the definitive regional anthem.
Chart Success and Live Performance Plans
Following the final whistle at Croke Park, the track received heavy rotation in the stadium and subsequently climbed to the top of the Irish streaming charts. Moran admitted he had “no great hopes” of a Mayo victory against Kerry beforehand, but called involvement in the historic day a pleasant surprise.
Despite the chart surge, fans hoping for spontaneous live appearances across County Mayo this week will likely be disappointed. According to the band, the group is currently focused on recording their first studio album in 15 years. Their scheduled summer appearances in Ireland include the main stage at Electric Picnic on August 7 and Falls Park for Belfast’s Féile.
