Until now, biologists believed these massive freshwater fish topped out at around 150 years of age. The mathematical analysis of four decades of field data reveals that large females may survive for more than four centuries, while males can reach ages spanning multiple centuries.
How Researchers Calculated a 427-Year Lifespan
Scientists did not actually pull a 400-year-old fish from the water during their fieldwork. Researchers spent decades catching, measuring, determining the sex of, tagging, and releasing the fish. Recapturing these same specimens later allowed teams to evaluate their growth rates over time.
Calculations show that roughly 160-centimeter-long males could live anywhere from 90 to 279 years. Meanwhile, females measuring about 180 centimeters in length could range from 99 to 427 years old.

"We concluded that sturgeon live significantly longer than previously thought based on studies of growth rings and fin ray cross-sections," Baker noted.

Population Decline and Modern Conservation Hurdles
Despite their ancient lineage and extraordinary potential lifespan, lake sturgeon populations have plummeted over the past few centuries. Out of more than 2 mln. sturgeon that once inhabited the Great Lakes, less than 1 percent of the historical population remains today. Intense commercial fishing nearly wiped out the species near the end of the 19th century, prompting strict regulatory limits on modern fishing.
This extreme longevity creates unique challenges for species recovery. Lake sturgeon reach sexual maturity much later than most other fish species. Females typically begin reproducing only after reaching 15 to 25 years of age. Consequently, even a minor increase in adult mortality can inflict long-term consequences across an entire population.
Researchers indicate that a clearer understanding of how long these fish live will directly improve conservation planning and habitat restoration efforts. Beyond historical overfishing, lake sturgeon face ongoing threats from water pollution, dams, and other infrastructure, as well as climate change.
