Sea Swimmers Take an Ice-Cold Dip Three Times a Week

Title: Defying the Elements: The Joy of Cold Water Swimming

The icy grip of winter does little to deter the indomitable spirits of the Egmondaan cold water swimming club. They battle the wind and waves with each high tide, but once in the water, elation takes over. "You feel alive," says Saskia van Poppel, a decade-long member of the club. "It helps me unwind from a busy lifestyle," she adds, relishing the freedom found in the frigid North Sea.

The club’s 80-year-old Jan Leermakers is a testament to the accessibility and benefits of cold water swimming. He’s been part of the group for three years and shows no signs of stopping. "It’s a great challenge and incredibly social," Jan shares, having moved from Brabant to North Holland for love. Here, he’s found a supportive community of friends who spur him on, with dreams of keeping up the habit until his nineties.

The Egmondse Nieuwjaarsduik, the club’s famed New Year’s Day dip, attracts nearly 2,500 participants each year. For a mere €7.50, registrants support the Stichting ALS foundation, receive a warm headband, and enjoy a hearty bowl of erwtensoep afterwards. As the age-old tradition of winter swimming gains popularity, enthusiasts worldwide praise its mental health benefits. So, why not embrace the chill and dive in? You might just find a new community and a fresh perspective on life along the way.
