Search for Missing Baby Continues After Tragic South Africa Deaths

Emergency services in South Australia suspended the search for a missing two-month-old boy on Tuesday afternoon due to dangerous conditions, after the bodies of his mother and toddler sister were recovered from the ocean off Cape Northumberland, according to South Australia Police.

Search Suspended at Cape Northumberland as Conditions Worsen

According to Superintendent Trent Cox, “extremely challenging” weather prevented emergency vessels from deploying into the water.

Crews focused instead on land searches around Cape Northumberland, the southernmost point of the state at Port MacDonnell on the Limestone Coast. “We will continue to leave no stone unturned… but the search has been suspended as it became too dangerous to continue,” Supt Cox stated. Survivability experts informed police that it is “very, very unlikely that the missing baby has survived to this point,” according to Supt Cox.

Bodies of Mother and Daughter Recovered From Southern Ocean

The tragedy unfolded after police were alerted to an abandoned car left with its engine running near Cape Northumberland around 11:15 a.m. on Monday. Shortly afterward, the bodies of a 36-year-old woman and her 23-month-old daughter were located in the ocean and retrieved with assistance from local fishermen.

Australian media identified the woman as Helena Wright, a mother of two who was born in Estonia and lived with her husband and family in Compton, a small community on the outskirts of Mount Gambier. SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens noted the profound emotional toll on the community and responders. “Searching for a small child and recovering a woman and a child from the water will take its toll on people who are involved in that search exercise,” Mr Stevens said, adding that police have spoken to the children’s father.

Local Leaders and Officials Respond to Limestone Coast Tragedy

Investigators from Major Crime detectives and specialist forensic officers remained stationed at the scene as inquiries continued. SA Police stated there is “no information to suggest that any other persons are involved in the incident and reports will be prepared for the coroner.”

“These types of tragedies are the ones that shock you to the core,” Mr Malinauskas said. “If it involves children, that breaks your heart, particularly when we know there is currently a two-month-old baby that is missing.”

Southern Limestone Coast Council Mayor Kylie Boston highlighted the strain on the close-knit region. “Everyone’s just a little bit shocked at the moment,” Mayor Boston told AAP. “We’ll let the police do the work they need to do, and everyone will just continue to support everyone.”
