NEW YORK – The first hours of the New Year saw several road incidents across Norway, with snowy conditions and icy roads cited as the primary culprits. Both minor collisions and more serious incidents were reported, though fortunately, no severe injuries were immediately reported.
In Haugesund, aNew Year’s Eve crash involving three vehicles left no reported injuries but could have been more serious. The accident occurred at around 3 PM on the E 134 highway near Skuggaberget. As per the update by South West Police, two vehicles collided, and a third skidded into them. The police suggested that a combination of poor tire traction, including a mix of summer and winter tires, and slippery roads was likely the cause. Authorities have opened a case and are evaluating potential driving license penalties.
In a separate incident, a bus carrying passengers and a driver lost control in Enebakk, south of Lillestrøm. At around 4:50 PM, the vehicle veered off the road and onto a nearby field during a turn. One passenger was thrown from the bus and rushed to Ullevål Hospital with unclear injuries. The remaining passengers and the driver were transported to AHUS for examination. Operational leader of the Eastern Police District, Kristian Loraas, attributed the incident to the snowy conditions.
As the New Year began, snowfall covered much of southern Norway, including Enebakk, leading to numerous minor incidents and collisions. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported by around 6 PM.
Authorities urge drivers to take caution while driving in snowy and icy conditions, reminding them of the importance of appropriate winter tires and maintaining a safe speed.
