An official discipline procedure is underway against a senior Garda Representative Association (GRA) member following public comments regarding workplace concerns, according to An Garda Síochána and GRA General Secretary Ronan Slevin.
Formal Disciplinary Action Initiated Over Public Remarks
The serving garda recently received formal notification of the procedure after speaking publicly on issues facing rank-and-file officers, including a lack of garda pursuit training.
Internal Code and Management Warnings
The investigation centers on a potential disciplinary offence linked to a section of the Garda Code, which is the internal human resources document used to govern the activities of serving gardaí.
An Garda Síochána stated that it does not comment on internal discipline matters, but noted that the organization maintains a clear policy regarding who may speak to the media on operational matters.
According to a garda spokesman, garda management has advised GRA management on multiple occasions over the last number of years regarding this stipulation, and senior management wrote to the GRA earlier this month about these and related matters.
GRA Defense and Whistleblower Fallout
GRA General Secretary Ronan Slevin strongly criticized the management’s actions, calling it incredulous that representatives are being disciplined for voicing workplace challenges.
Slevin stated that the GRA will continue to vigorously defend the right of senior elected representatives to comment publicly on the health, safety, rights, and wellbeing of their members.
He connected the disciplinary move to the aftermath of an RTÉ Full Disclosure documentary that examined allegations regarding whistleblowers being targeted within the organization’s protected disclosure system.
Statutory Mandate and Industrial Relations
Despite the ongoing dispute over media commentary, An Garda Síochána stated that it respects the mandate of garda associations as outlined under Section 59 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.
The statute covers representative roles concerning member welfare, efficiency, pay, pensions, and conditions of service.
The garda spokesman added that the organization works with representative bodies through constructive and professional engagement in line with normal industrial relations practice, while a statement has also been requested from the Department of Justice.
