Fatal Crash on N356: 22-Year-Old Dies in Single-Vehicle Accident
A 22-year-old driver from the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân lost their life in a tragic one-vehicle accident on the N356, also known as the Central Axis, on Friday morning. The accident occurred around 6:40 AM between the villages of Feanwâlden and De Westereen.
Icy road conditions caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which subsequently flipped over and landed in a ditch. Despite the swift response of emergency services, including police, fire fighters, paramedics, and a trauma helicopter, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The local police are conducting an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. After the accident site was cleared and made safe, traffic was temporarily diverted via a single lane (towards Hurdegaryp) during the removal and cleanup process. Earlier, the entire road had been closed to ensure the safety of the emergency services personnel.
In a strange turn of events, this stretch of road had seen similar incidents just the previous evening. Heavy hail caused two cars to lose control and slide off the road in almost the exact same location.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the crucial importance of driving safely, especially in challenging weather conditions. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
