Stormy Holidays: Violent Winds and Heavy Rain Threaten Nord-Norge

As Christmas Eve approaches, Meteorological Institute has issued an orange warning for wind gusts up to 50 meters per second (112 mph) in Nordland and Troms. Vakthavende Meteorolog Jon Austerheim from Meteorologisk institutt in Tromsø confirms this, stating, "There’s a proper storm center passing the sea outside us. It’s coming closer to the coast of Finnmark on Wednesday, bringing stormy and gusty conditions to Troms."

Compounding this, a shift to mild weather brings rain instead of snow. Austerheim adds, "It’s going to be rough weather in Nord-Norge in the coming days. It’s best to stay indoors."

Starting Christmas Day, strong winds are expected in Lofoten, Vesterålen, and along Troms’ coast. In Finnmark, winds may reach storm force in exposed areas. This severe weather is set to continue through the next few days.

The exact location, time, and strength of the strongest winds remain uncertain. South Troms and Northland are most at risk, with winds possibly reaching 50 meters per second (112 mph), or a severe westerly storm. The warning is updated continuously, and Austerheim urges travelers to plan safely.

Mild weather and rain are expected on Christmas Eve in Nordland and will spread to Troms and Finnmark throughout the night. Temperatures may rise to 7°C (45°F). This change may impact Christmas travel, with Austerheim advising, "It’s going to be slippery in many places. Be careful driving, stay alert, and secure loose items."

Christmas Eve also brings ice warnings in Troms due to the temperature rise and rain. The mild, moist weather is not confined to Nord-Norge. Eastern Norway faces slippery roads on Christmas Eve, while western and central Norway prepare for heavy rain and local flooding.

On Christmas Day, rain warnings are in effect for Nordvestlandet and Trøndelag, with up to 70 mm (2.75 inches) of rain expected within 24 hours.

Snøskredvarsel:
There’s a moderate to significant risk of avalanches in several parts of Norway, especially on Svalbard, where the risk is high. From Christmas Day, significant avalanche risk is expected in large parts of Norway.

Stay safe and informed during these stormy holidays in Nord-Norge.
