Headline: Stormy Start to the New Year: Five Argentine Provinces on Alert for Severe Weather
As the first Sunday of the year rolls in, Argentina can expect generally favorable weather conditions, with a notable exception in some northwestern regions and the Cuyo area. According to the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), these regions are bracing for strong thunderstorms, while the rest of the country, including the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), can anticipate mostly cloudy skies.
A yellow alert has been issued for major parts of Mendoza, Catamarca, Salta, Tucumán, and Jujuy, warning residents of potential weather disruptions. These provinces can expect "phenomena with the capacity to cause damage and temporarily disrupt daily activities," as per the SMN’s early warning system.
Mendoza: The SMN predicts intense rainfall in Malargüe, San Rafael, General Alvear, and other areas, accompanied by strong gusts, hail, and lightning. Locally heavy or severe storms are expected, with accumulated precipitation between 20 to 40 mm, with potential localized spikes.
Catamarca, Salta, Tucumán, and Jujuy: The stormy conditions will also affect Tinogasta, Antofagasta de la Sierra, Belén, and other cities in Catamarca. Similarly, Salta’s Cachi, Cafayate, and El Valle de Lerma valleys, as well as all regions in Jujuy, will experience the same stormy scenario.
In contrast, Buenos Aires and the Greater Buenos Aires area will see temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C, with minimal precipitation chances. Expect a mainly cloudy day, mild winds, and around 70% humidity.
So, while most of Argentina enjoys the start of 2023, five provinces must stay weather-ready. Keep safe and stay informed!
