New York Marathon champion Sheila Chepkirui is set to defend her title at the Nagoya Women’s Marathon on Sunday, with her sights set on breaking the 2:20 barrier.

Dominant Performance Last Year

Chepkirui clinched victory in the 2025 Nagoya Women’s Marathon with a time of 2:20:40. She outperformed Japan’s Sayaka Sato (2:20:59) and Bahrain’s Eunice Chumba (2:21:35).

Weather Dependent Speed

The Kenyan athlete expressed her ambition to improve upon her previous time, stating, “My goal on Sunday will be to try and defend my title.” She also noted that favorable weather conditions could be key to achieving a sub-2:20 finish.

Consistent Training Regimen

Chepkirui has maintained a consistent training approach, mirroring her preparations from the previous year. “I haven’t changed my training; it is similar to my training before last year’s race. My main area of focus has been on gym work,” she explained.

A Mixed 2025 Season

Despite her Nagoya win, Chepkirui experienced a varied 2025 season. She participated in the 5,000m race at the Kenya Defence Forces championships, finishing seventh in 15:57.5. However, she rebounded with a win in the 10,000m at the same championships, clocking 33:34.14.

Road Race Successes

Chepkirui continued to demonstrate her prowess on the roads, securing seventh place at the Boston 10K in 32:17. She then achieved victory at the Great North Run Half Marathon in Britain, finishing in 1:09:32.

Podium Finish in New York

The year culminated in a third-place finish at the New York Marathon, where Kenyan women dominated the podium, with Hellen Obiri (2:19:51) and Sharon Lokedi (2:20:07) taking first and second place, respectively.

Strong Competition in Nagoya

Chepkirui will face stiff competition in Nagoya from Ethiopia’s Aynalem Desta, the 2025 Amsterdam Marathon champion, and Eunice Chumba of Bahrain, who finished third last year. Selly Kaptich, the 2022 Frankfurt Marathon champion, will also be competing.
