Title: Tension Marked Relations: Claudia Sheinbaum Reflects on U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar‘s Tenure
In her daily press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum looked back at the tenure of outgoing U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar, describing it as a period marked by disagreements, particularly around the judicial reform and the arrest of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada.
Sheinbaum characterized Salazar’s time as ambassador as "challenging," noting that the last period was especially marked by tensions. When asked to evaluate his performance, Sheinbaum candidly stated, "I would say that in the last period, there were disagreements with the ambassador."
The rifts between the Mexican government and Salazar were widespread. Among the most significant incidents was Salazar’s opposition to the government’s proposed judicial reform, a stance that drew criticism and ignited controversy. Sheinbaum drove this point home: "He would praise and criticize [the reform] in the same breath, which is not his role. The Mexican government has the authority to decide on our own matters."
Another contentious issue was the arrest in the U.S. of Zambada, a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel. Despite Mexico’s requests for information, Sheinbaum revealed that the involvement of U.S. authorities in the operation remains unclear. She lamented, "We still don’t know the full extent of U.S. involvement, nor how they managed to detain him."
However, despite these flashpoints, Sheinbaum stressed that the tensions did not damage the bilateral relationship. She compared it to an earlier incident with Spain’s King Felipe VI, where a brief standoff did not escalate into a full-blown diplomatic crisis.
As Salazar’s time as ambassador comes to an end, these reflections underscore the complexities and challenges inherent in managing one of the world’s most significant international relationships. The stage is now set for the incoming U.S. ambassador to navigate these dynamics, strive to strengthen ties, and work towards mutual understanding and cooperation.
