“Right now, I’m not thinking too much about it, but I have a few things to consider. I’ll get to that in a few days,” Åkerström stated following the defeat to MoDo. “I’ve played well in previous years and they were close [to signing me], but it didn’t happen. Then age plays a role. If I’m going to succeed in the SHL, I might demand a top-six role and a spot on the second powerplay. Then it becomes, ‘which team will give a 30-year-old that instead of taking a chance on younger players?’ That’s how they reason, and I’m aware of it.”
AIK’s Desire to Retain Åkerström
AIK’s management is keen to retain Åkerström’s services. Sportchef Lasse Johansson confirmed the club is working to extend his contract, recognizing his value to the team. “Simon is a fantastic hockey player for us, and of course, we would like to keep him,” Johansson said.
Åkerström acknowledges AIK’s interest, stating he is aware of their desire to keep him. He expressed his love for playing in AIK and his enjoyment of life in Stockholm, but also hinted at a desire for a fresh challenge. “I’ve been in this league for a long time now, and somewhere along the line, if you’ve gotten a little tired and want to see something new… that’s where I need to land.”

“What will be decisive for which decision I make about the future? What I feel… I’ve been in this league for a long time now, and somewhere there, if you’ve gotten a little tired and want to see something new. That’s where I need to land. But as I said, I love being here in Stockholm, on the other hand maybe it’s time to see something new. That’s where I need to make a choice, and talk to my partner too.”
