Singapore to train 100,000 AI-savvy workers by 2029

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Singapore launched the National AI Impact Programme (NAIIP) on March 2, 2026, with the goal of strengthening the nation’s AI capabilities across both businesses and its workforce. The initiative aims to equip 10,000 enterprises and train 100,000 workers by 2029.

A Latest Approach to AI Skills

Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo announced the NAIIP during a parliamentary debate, emphasizing the power of combining “AI know-how, domain expertise and the human touch.” The program envisions a workforce where professionals – from accountants to lawyers – are “bilingual” in AI and their respective fields, enabling them to solve problems more effectively.

Did You Know? In November 2024, a KPMG senior manager created an AI agent to automate the extraction of information from the Singapore Exchange, halving the time required for this task.

To facilitate this shift, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) will expand its TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) program. For the first time, TeSA will offer tailored programs for non-tech occupations, beginning with the accountancy and legal professions, and expanding to include fields like human resources. Launched in 2016, TeSA has already helped over 24,300 mid-career workers transition into tech roles.

Support for Businesses

The NAIIP will also focus on supporting businesses in adopting AI. IMDA will launch a Digital Leaders Accelerator Bootcamp to build confidence and expertise through hands-on AI project development. The Productivity Solutions Grant will also increase its support for AI-enabled solutions, raising the proportion to 50% from the current 30%.

Expert Insight: The NAIIP acknowledges that widespread AI adoption isn’t automatic. Without targeted support, smaller businesses may struggle to keep pace, potentially impacting economic growth and the livelihoods of entrepreneurs, and workers.

Recent data from the Singapore Digital Economy Report indicates growing AI adoption rates: 14.5% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) had adopted AI in 2024, up from 4.2% in 2023. Among larger companies, adoption jumped from 44% to 62.5% over the same period.
