Six Arrests Made in Renoir Painting Theft in France

French police arrested six suspects across four southern and eastern departments in connection with the theft of four Pierre-Auguste Renoir paintings from the Musée Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer, nos.nl reported. The stolen artworks, which include pieces on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, were taken during a targeted break-in on September 8.

Investigators took the six arrested individuals to Nice for questioning on suspicion of organized-gang theft, according to nos.nl.

Inside the Three-Minute Musée Renoir Break-In

The thieves executed a precise operation on September 8, arriving around 06:00 in the morning and entering through a glass door. Security footage reviewed after the incident showed the perpetrators cutting through wall anchors to remove the artworks in under three minutes, nos.nl stated. Investigators arriving at the scene discovered that a section of the facility’s perimeter fence had been cut to grant the intruders access to the grounds.

The stolen items represented the four most valuable pieces in the museum, which opened in 1960 inside the property where Renoir lived until his death in 1919. During their escape, the thieves dropped and left behind two of the paintings in the museum garden, where police quickly recovered them, nos.nl and Haarlems Dagblad reported.

Two Renoir Masterpieces Still Missing

While two of the four canvases were recovered outside the museum, the remaining two impressionist works remain unaccounted for, according to nos.nl. The missing pieces are Madame Colonna Romano, painted around 1910, and Jeune Femme au puits, created around 1886. Haarlems Dagblad reported that the two unrecovered paintings carry an estimated combined value between 8 en 10 miljoen euro.

The incident follows a broader wave of museum thefts across France. Following the break-in at Cagnes-sur-Mer, Cultuurminister Catherine Pégard stated that an eight-minute heist at the Louvre in Paris on October 19, 2025, initiated a “trieste reeks” (sad series) of cultural property thefts that also affected museums in Strasbourg and Châtillon-sur-Seine, Haarlems Dagblad reported.
