A Deadly Spike in Wellington GHB Overdoses
A sixth person has been hospitalized in the Wellington region following a suspected overdose of GHB, the drug commonly known as fantasy or liquid ecstasy. Since last Friday, police have recorded six cases across the capital, including one fatality. Detective Inspector Anna Grant confirmed the latest victim was found overnight in Wainuiomata and remains in serious condition.
The Volatility of a Dangerous Depressant
GHB functions as a central nervous system depressant, typically producing euphoria and relaxation within 15 to 20 minutes of ingestion. The substance appears as a clear, oily liquid, usually masked by mixing it with water or soft drinks. Police warn that the drug is exceptionally dangerous; the margin between a desired effect and a fatal overdose is often a matter of mere millilitres. Because potency varies wildly between batches, the risk of death compounds rapidly if users re-dose too quickly or combine the drug with alcohol or other depressants.

Geographic Spread Across the Capital
The cluster of six suspected overdoses has shaken the Wellington district over the past week. Incidents have emerged in Miramar, Brooklyn, Johnsonville, Upper Hutt, and most recently, Wainuiomata. Of the initial five individuals affected, one person died, three required hospitalization, and a fifth was treated and discharged, according to Detective Inspector Anna Grant.
Urgent Investigations and Public Warnings
Police are treating the string of overdoses as a priority, working to determine if the cases are linked and to track the source of the supply. Detective Inspector Anna Grant has urged the public to exercise extreme caution regarding the substance. New Zealand’s drug early warning system, High Alert, reports a nationwide trend of rising GHB overdoses, with a concentrated surge of emergency department presentations currently hitting the Wellington region. While High Alert maintains that avoiding drug use entirely is the only truly safe option, they advise that individuals should at least have substances checked before consumption.
Medical Pressure and Ongoing Vigilance
As the investigation continues, police may release further details regarding the origin of the supply should connections between the six cases be confirmed. Should the trend of emergency admissions persist, healthcare providers will face continued pressure to manage these specific substance-related cases. Officials have emphasized that anyone feeling unwell after taking a substance must seek urgent medical attention.
