Immersive Installation Transforms Historic Brighton Tunnel into Sanctuary of Light
A hidden piece of Brighton’s transit history has been repurposed as a site for reflection, and storytelling. The historic Cab Road Tunnel, once a dedicated route for horse-drawn taxis accessing Brighton Station, is currently hosting an immersive sound and light installation titled We Are Warriors. The exhibition is scheduled to remain open to the public daily from 11 am to 7 pm until Sunday, May 24, 2026.
A Platform for Marginalized Voices
Part of the current Brighton Festival, the installation is a collaborative production by In Between Time, Dreamy Place, and videoclub. The project, which was originally developed in partnership with 130 women and girls in Bristol and debuted in the city’s Redcliffe Caves, seeks to amplify the voices of women, girls, trans, and non-binary people. Organizers describe the work as a tribute to those who have been marginalized, silenced, or lost.
Helen Cole, artistic director and founder of In Between Time, emphasized the installation’s intent to serve as a beacon of resilience. “This work is all about pushing back the dark,” Cole said. “We hoped it would spark resonance, reflection and resilience with Brighton audiences, but we’ve been blown away by our visitors’ insight and generosity.”
Public Engagement and Future Reach
The experience combines flickering lights with a soundscape composed of whispers, roars, and lullabies. Visitors are encouraged to contribute to the evolving nature of the piece by placing their own lights within the tunnel, participating in what organizers describe as a growing “global chorus reclaiming dark spaces as sanctuaries of shared strength.”

Public response to the installation has been notably positive. Visitors have characterized the experience as “a wonderground,” “awe-inspiring,” and “utterly beautiful.” One attendee noted it was “so immense, so simple, so moving,” while others praised the unique opportunity to engage with the otherwise closed-off historic space through contemplative art.
What Comes Next
While the Cab Road Tunnel has hosted various art installations in recent years, the current run of We Are Warriors marks a significant chapter in the space’s transition from a closed transit route to an active cultural venue. Following the conclusion of the Brighton exhibition on May 24, the installation is expected to embark on an international tour, with future presentations planned for Australia and Latvia. As the project moves to these new locations, it is likely to continue its mission of gathering further contributions to its global light-based chorus.
