South Korean Opposition Seeks Premier’s Resignation; Political Tensions Escalate
The South Korean opposition has submitted a motion to impeach the acting president and prime minister, Han Duck-soo. This move comes amid a political crisis triggered by President Yoon Suk-yeol‘s declaration of a state of emergency earlier this month.
Premier Han’s Refusal to Appoint Judges Sparks Impeachment
The opposition has cited Han’s refusal to approve the appointment of new judges to the Constitutional Court as the reason for the impeachment motion. These judges have been nominated by the largest opposition party, which holds a majority in the National Assembly. Under the South Korean constitution, the parliament selects the judges, but the president must approve their appointments.
Yoon’s Presidency in Limbo; Impeachment Hanging in Balance
President Yoon’s political powers were suspended following a parliamentary vote. To formally remove him from office, six of the nine Constitutional Court justices must approve the impeachment. Currently, five out of the nine positions are vacant, raising concerns that the remaining justices may not reach a unanimous decision.
Opposition vs. Government: A Numbers Game
The opposition and the ruling party are at odds over the number of votes required to remove Han from office. The opposition argues that a simple majority of 151 votes is sufficient, while the ruling party insists that a two-thirds majority is needed. This division could make it challenging for the opposition to successfully impeach Han, as they would need support from members of the ruling party.
First Hearing for Yoon’s Impeachment Next Week
The Constitutional Court is scheduled to hold its first hearing on Yoon’s impeachment later this week. It remains uncertain whether the impeached president will testify. Previously, Yoon failed to appear when summoned by prosecutors, and searches of his office were obstructed.
Protests Continue in South Korea
Meanwhile, protesters in Seoul have been demonstrating almost daily, calling for Yoon’s resignation. The political future of both Yoon and Han hangs in the balance as South Korea grapples with this political impasse.
