South Korean President’s Guards Warned Against Blocking Arrest Warrant Execution

SEOUL — South Korea’s presidential security service has been warned that blocking the execution of an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk-yeol would be considered dereliction of duty, a senior official said Friday.

The warning comes amid growing political tension over the issuance of an arrest warrant for Yoon by a lower court on charges of power abuse and coercion. The president’s lawyers have vowed to appeal the decision, and a warrant has yet to be issued.

"If the presidential security service interferes with the warrant execution, it would be considered an extremely serious breach of duty," the official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, political analysts in the U.S. suggest that the political chaos in South Korea could play to China‘s advantage, with the latter looking to capitalize on instability in its regional rival.

Locally, public opinion appears divided. While some support Yoon and criticize what they see as a politically motivated prosecution, others argue that no one is above the law and that Yoon should face justice if guilty.

This discrepancy is reflected in the legislature, with Yoon’s ruling People Power Party pushing for legislation to grant the president immunity from prosecution while in office, and the main opposition Democratic Party vehemently opposing such a move.

On Thursday, a lower court rejected Yoon’s appeal against the arrest warrant, paving the way for the warrant to be issued and executed. However, the president’s lawyers are considering taking the case to the Supreme Court as a last resort.

The tug-of-war over the arrest warrant is the latest episode in a series of political crises that have gripped South Korea in recent years, including the impeachment and removal from office of previous president Park Geun-hye in 2017.

Whilst the intricate twists and turns of South Korean politics may seem far removed from the average international observer, the outcome could have significant implications for the region, not least in terms of its major power dynamics.
