CSK Bolsters Pace Attack with Spencer Johnson, But Injury Concerns Loom
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have added Australian left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson to their squad for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The move comes as a direct replacement for the injured Nathan Ellis, who aggravated a hamstring injury during a domestic One-Day Cup final on March 11th.
A Familiar Face with IPL Experience
Johnson isn’t new to the IPL. He has previously represented both Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He was acquired by GT for INR 10 crore in 2024, taking four wickets in five matches. Last season, playing for KKR, he secured one wicket in four appearances before being released ahead of the 2026 auction where he went unsold.
Back Injury Recovery and Delayed Arrival
Whereas Johnson’s addition provides a boost to CSK’s pace attack, his arrival will be delayed due to a recent back injury. He is recovering from a stress fracture that kept him out of the BBL. According to his domestic coach, Ryan Harris, Johnson is back bowling but is currently only at around 60% capacity. He is expected to join the CSK squad around April 21-23.
This means Johnson will miss at least the first four of CSK’s matches against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals.
What Harris Says About Johnson’s Recovery
Ryan Harris shared positive updates on Johnson’s progress, stating the crack in his back has healed. Harris likewise mentioned adjustments are being made to Johnson’s bowling action to mitigate future back issues. “We’ve been just tweaking a couple of things…and he’s doing really well,” Harris explained.
CSK’s Pace Bowling Options
With Johnson’s addition, CSK now boasts a diverse pace bowling lineup including Matt Henry, Jamie Overton, Zak Foulkes, Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh, and Mukesh Choudhary, alongside all-rounders Shivam Dube and Aman Khan.
Ellis’s Injury and Replacement Cost
Nathan Ellis was retained by CSK for INR 2 crore despite playing only one game for the team in 2025. Johnson will be joining CSK for INR 1.5 crore.
