ESPN averaged 1.4 million viewers for its WNBA playoff coverage this season, marking a 23% increase over last year’s pre-Finals average of 1.1 million, Sports Media Watch reported. Despite missing out on several marquee matchups, the network secured its highest average on record at this point of the postseason.
Split Broadcast Schedule Cuts ESPN First Round Coverage
Unlike previous seasons when ESPN networks carried the entire WNBA playoff slate, this year’s coverage was split with NBCUniversal, USA Network, and Prime Video. Consequently, ESPN and ABC combined to air only eight of the 16 total first- and second-round games, down from all 20 games played prior to the Finals last year, according to Sports Media Watch.
The network missed out on the most-watched game of the playoffs—Fever-Aces Game 3 in the first round, which drew 2.25 million viewers on USA Sports—as well as a full semifinal series between the Valkyries and Aces. However, the schedule adjustments also spared ESPN from carrying lower-rated playoff games.
Fever Games Drive Broad Platform Growth
ESPN noted that its regular-season broadcasts averaged 1.2 million viewers following the arrival of Caitlin Clark in 2024, a 170% jump from the 440,000 average recorded over the previous 17 years.

Fox News reported that Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever delivered the largest regular-season audience on all seven broadcast platforms in 2026, including CBS, ESPN, ION, NBC and Peacock, USA Network, and Amazon Prime Video. Non-Fever regular-season broadcasts on ESPN and ABC also saw gains, averaging 984,000 viewers, which is up 24% from the previous year, according to Sports Media Watch.
Final Semifinal Game Brings Solid Viewership to ESPN2
The network’s semifinal coverage concluded with Dream-Liberty Game 3 on ESPN2, which drew a 0.7 rating and 1.435 million viewers—up 1% in viewership compared to Aces-Fever Game 3 last year.
The semifinal round marked the end of ESPN’s WNBA broadcast schedule for the year. NBCUniversal and USA Sports will share coverage of the WNBA Finals, representing the first time since 2000 that ESPN will not carry a Finals game, Sports Media Watch reported.
Historic Milestones and Global Reach in the 30th Season
The WNBA’s milestone 30th season brought historic team, individual, and coaching accomplishments alongside global activations. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert stated that the league’s 30th season delivered extraordinary fan engagement, record viewership, packed arenas, and spectacular basketball, adding that generations of players, teams, fans, and others built the league. Throughout the season, 51 telecasts averaged at least 1 million viewers, marking an increase from 19 in 2025, while fans watched more than 320 million hours of regular-season coverage. The first round averaged 1.3 million viewers to stand as the most-watched opening round ever. USA Network averaged 525,000 viewers in its inaugural season, sitting 25% above the league’s 2025 average cable audience, while Prime Video’s average audience topped the 2025 league cable average by 5%. GM Amber Cox noted that the Fever appeared in 14 of the top 15 broadcasts overall, with the All-Star Game serving as the only exception, a contest featuring three Fever players. Coaching achievements saw Minnesota Lynx leader Cheryl Reeve surpass Mike Thibault’s record of 379 to become the all-time leader in regular-season wins, finishing the year with 397 victories, and Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon become the second-fastest head coach to reach 150 regular-season wins by doing so in 205 games, trailing only former Houston Comets head coach Van Chancellor.
Did you know? Nine telecasts during the milestone 30th season averaged more than 2 million viewers, breaking the previous league record, according to the WNBA.
