Headline: Unseasonable Warmth in Bulgaria: 20°C Records Topped in Several Cities
Bulgaria is basking in unseasonably warm weather for January, with several cities reporting temperatures of 20°C or more. The weather anomaly, often associated with spring, has brought welcome sunshine and mild conditions to parts of the country.
The towns of Kneja, Svișov, Veliko Tarnovo, and Ahтопол all reached 20°C, while the maxima in Vratsa, Montana, Northeastern Bulgaria, and the Danube Plain, as well as in Varna, stood at a comfortable 18°C. Lomëc also witnessed a high of 20°C. These figures mark a stark contrast to the historical records for January 8, with the highest previously recorded being 18.4°C in 2005. The lowest temperature ever registered on this date, -19°C, was experienced in 1969.
In the capital, Sofia, temperatures hovered around 11-12°C today. However, forecasts suggest that temperatures will rise further in the coming days, with mainly sunny weather expected to dominate in most of the country through Thursday.
While North America experienced a deep freeze, Bulgaria’s unseasonable warmth is backed by meteorological data. In 2017, Kюstenдил recorded a low of -26°C on this date, and the lowest January temperature ever recorded in Veliko Tarnovo was -22.6°C in 1960.
