Stop Manually Over-Provisioning and Do This Instead

If you’ve been manually over-provisioning, you can reclaim that space. Delete the unallocated partition and extend your primary drive in Disk Management on Windows.

Ensure TRIM support is enabled in your operating system. In Windows 11, open Command Prompt as administrator and type: fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify . If the result for both ReFS and NTFS is not “0”, type fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0.

There Are Still Cases Where Over-Provisioning Makes Sense

Over-provisioning can still be beneficial for sustained, heavy write workloads (video editing, virtual machines) or with budget/DRAM-less SSDs. However, for everyday users, modern SSDs are optimized enough that manual over-provisioning offers little benefit.
